Corporate law prepares you to deal with issues of business transactions of today, such as taxation, labor and employment, corporate finance, intellectual property, and international transactions.

Corporate lawyers have a single client, and are usually called “in-house” counsel. In this role you would advise the company concerning legal issues related to all aspects of their business activities. You may deal with patents, contract law, mergers, liabilities, government regulations, contracts with other companies, property interests as well as agreements with unions.

Your main role would be to ensure that all transactions for your company are within state and federal law. The nice thing about a corporate law practice is that it is very much team-oriented and there is little competition with lawyers from the opposite side of the team. The lack of animosity and heated competition makes the job less stressful and easier to handle.

Training for a law degree in corporate law, begins the same as for other law specializations. You must first obtain a four year bachelors degree – in any area but finance, accounting, economics or business may be a good choice. Following undergraduate study, you will have to enroll in law school and obtain a law degree.

Like in other law specializations, the first year of a corporate law degree program is spend on general legal study, such as contracts, constitutional law, torts, legal writing, property law and civil procedures. More specialized classes include accounting, bankruptcy, corporate acquisitions, corporate reorganization, corporate finance, corporate fraud, corporate tax, deals, corporations, ethics and legal environments, business planning, organizational behavior, secured credit and venture capital.

Almost any merger or business takeover we read about or hear has a corporate lawyer involved and working on the process. As a corporate lawyer, you would provide advice on mergers, takeovers and acquisitions, as well as draft employment contracts and review documents, agreements and financial statements for potential problems and issues.

Your clients could be entrepreneurs, small privately owned business or large multinational corporations. Regardless of the size of your client organization, you would likely spend time working with investment bankers and accountants.

While there is no specific data for corporate lawyers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of lawyers is expected to increase as fast as the average for all jobs thought 2014. Due to the growing number of corporations as well as the rising legal scrutiny placed on them, it is likely that corporate lawyers will be in great demand.
