Online Nursing Degree

What is a Nurse?

An online nursing degree may be a great fit for you. Do you like taking care of people? Are you caring, patient and comforting? Medical facilities could not function without nurses. Nurses support the general practitioner, physician, dentists and surgeons, providing hands-on care. Shortages of nurses as well as a wide variety of career advancement possibilities make online nursing education a wise chose.

Type of Nursing Degrees
There are a wide number of different Online Nursing Programs to choose from. Before deciding on a school it is critical that you choose the program that fits you best. The most common online nursing degree programs are:

Associate Degree Nursing
Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse LPN/LVN
Registered Nurse - RN
Bachelor of Science in Nursing – BSN
Master of Science Degree in Nursing MSN
Doctorate of Science Degree in Nursing

Online Nursing Careers

A nursing degree program will allow you to choose from an array of exciting and fulfilling careers. Think hard about what you like, what your strengths are and where you feel you will excel the most. To help you pinpoint your needs, read about some entry level nursing professions:

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
Health Service Administration
Health Information Technology

Advantage of an Online Nursing Degree

There are a number of reasons for choosing to obtain a Nursing Degree online versus a traditional 4-year college:

1. Flexible schedule to fit your busy lifestyle. Work and study from home.

2. Lower cost by avoiding out of state charges/ financial aid available.

3. Admission is easier because online schools are not as restrictive.

4. Communicate with peers and teachers by email, phone conferences, discussion groups and chats.

5. Complete your online nursing degree at your own pace – take only a few classes or accelerate obtaining a degree.

How do Nursing Online Classes Work?

You complete the non-clinical portion of your course work via the Internet. The clinical requirements for each degree type are completed at a medical facility near your home or of your choice.

For the non-clinical portion of your course work, most schools will not require spending time on campus. RN-BSN and MSN degrees are the most commonly offered degrees online.

Online course content is the same as that of traditional courses. While you do not have the face-to-face contact, online students do get to interact with instructors via email, conference calls and chat rooms.

Questions to Ask When Choosing an Online Nursing Program:

• Determine Your State’s Requirements and make sure that the school meet your state’s requirements adequately.

• How will Clinical Experience be Arranged? Does it have to be on campus or can it be at a facility closes to you?

• Choose the Nursing Program YOU want to study THEN the online school. Never adjust your program choice based on the school.

• Compare a number of online schools on a set of criteria important to you. Don’t focus on COST alone.

Consider accreditation, test scores (what percentage of students pass the licensing exam), delivery method, support system, and average online degree completion time.

Finally, get prepared to work just AS HARD as if you enroll in a traditional nursing program. Delivery of material may be different but the rigor is the same between online and traditional schools!
